Brother Bear

Many people have asked how J is adjusting to a new brother. Let's just be honest here...I think his facial expression says it all...

An honest picture would be that J will acknowledge his baby brother by telling you his name, location, and a sweet kiss at night. Other than that, he could care less that we have a new member of the family. :( Many friends have told me that this is normal. A friend of mine still deals with this behavior 6 mos. after her baby was born, so she asked our pediatrician about it. The doctor explained that 3 year olds aren't necessarily jealous, in the true sense of the word, but they remember life before baby and may resist the change.

Last Sunday night, Dave had praise band practice, so I needed to put both boys to bed. We usually split the duties...you know, divide and conquer, but this night it couldn't be that way. My luck was great in that J's bedtime and L's feeding time fell at the same exact time! So, this left L awake while I put J down. I decided to take him in J's room for the bedtime routine. I briefly wondered how it would go, but I didn't think too much about it. As soon as I put L on the bed, I could see J cutting his eyes at him while he laid sweetly on the pillow. We read our bedtime book as usual but with just one extra listener. :) J was a little whiny, but he can be this way at bedtime and naptime when I put him down. So, I just continued business as usual. I made sure J sat right beside me as always, but he still seemed a little uneasy. Then, we prayed, and I laid next to him. Well, at this point, I had to put L between us to be sure he didn't fall. Again, J would just barely look at him and continued to whine off and on. Finally, I told J goodnight and all of the other precious things I tell him before going to sleep. All of a sudden, I see J's hand sliding under L's back, and he proceeds to repeatedly tell me to get him "up" (loudly). I asked him if he wanted L to leave and he said "yes"! However, I noticed that J nicely put L's paci back in his mouth. I thought maybe I was reading the situation wrong. Nope, I later figured out J was being sure L took all of his belongings. So, I started getting down with the intentions of getting L next, when I hear "down" (loudly with some crying mixed in) and see a slight nudge on little brother. I kept assuring him that L was leaving, but I guess I couldn't get him fast enough for J. We left with J starting to cry. I put L in his crib to watch his mobile for a minute. I went back in and talked to J. I left teary-eyed, sad that J isn't in love with our new baby. Meanwhile, Dave calls to let me know he is on his way home. I share this entire story with him. His response..."Well, J is just going to have to suck it up...it's not all about him!" I felt so much better...urgh! Then, Dave realized that his statement didn't go over well, a little harsh for this postpartum mommy, and he simply explained that we would have to tell J how that behavior really isn't nice. All I can say is, thank goodness for good friends who have had similar stories to share with me.

On another note, most friends and family have really made an effort to give J attention and gifts along with his new brother. This actually has meant more to me than I ever expected. I didn't realize just how cognizant and sensitive we are of our older child's feelings while welcoming a younger one.

Hello Friends!

I am growing sooo fast! I went to see Dr. Riley last Thursday, and I am already 8 lbs.! I love to eat...every 3-4 hours to be exact!! I am also very strong! I turned over for my doctor at 9 days old. She asked me what I would be doing for her later on, since I am already turning over NOW. I have my own opinion about things...for instance, I really don't like the Pack-n-Play or my crib to sleep. My bouncer is where I choose to snooze, but my swing will work for naps. I know my mommy and daddy's voice. I really try hard to find my daddy when he talks to me! During my free time, Mommy plays the sound machine for me in my room, and I really love it! I am such a sweet, sweet boy!!

Happy Father's Day

The boys and I celebrated with Dave on Sunday by taking him out to Carrabba's for lunch! I tried to do some small treats for him like a frappuccino from Starbucks and few less duties with the boys for the day. However, he still worked pretty hard on his special day!

So thankful for my own sweet daddy who instilled in me the qualities to look for in a husband and father of my children. Because of his example, unconditional love, and confidence in me, I was able to follow God's lead to my amazing husband and father to our boys. Those may just seem like empty words, but there is nothing cliche about a man who works really hard to provide for his family, gives unselfishly to his wife, plays for hours with his oldest son and works as hard as I do to help him be a better speaker, desires & works toward bonding with his two week old little boy, and loves the Lord with his whole heart!

A Little Piece Of Heaven

Our new little guy is absolute pure sweetness!!! Dave and I are so in love with him!! I REALLY don't want him to grow up!!! The time will pass quickly as it already has, and I will never have these precious days again. We are so grateful to our God for blessing us with this boy!

A Few First Experiences

It is much different having a summer baby! The pediatrician encouraged us to get out of the house, and J definitely needs to be out & about like normal. The doctor just recommended places without many children and where most people don't know us. We all get cabin fever quickly! So, last weekend we took J and L out to Moe's for dinner. We have one particular Moe's here that is our favorite. It isn't usually busy at night, and there is this small outside play area that J LOVES! There are patio tables for us to sit and watch him. We headed there last Saturday night, and L did awesome. Here is L right before we left and J at the playground.

On Sunday, we went for a walk in the morning and then to the pool for awhile. Dave and J swam while L and I watched. J did some great swimming, but I can't seem to get my video uploaded. The part where he threw up his lunch on the side of the pool wasn't so pleasant, but it happens...especially when excitement + air + a little pool water + lunch an hour earlier all mix together in a little guy's belly!

Going Home

We brought Luke home on June 4th! We had such a great stay at the hospital, but it was exciting to be a family again...only difference...we're now a family of FOUR!

Breech Brothers

It looks like I carry and deliver breech babies! Dr. Barnes explained that there really isn't a medical reason why I have had two breech babies, but it is sorta neat that I have had it happen twice. They both have perfect little heads...partly due to the c-section and also because they were breech. The nurses can always spot a breech baby before being told simply by their legs and head.

Which brother am I????

This little guy was in the footling breech position. This means his legs were straight.

This little guy was either in the complete breech position or what they call the "frank position". My guess is the complete position based on the doctor's comments...I forgot to ask.

If you looked at the date on pic, you quickly realized that the first pic is Luke and the second one is Jack!

Jack and Luke

The day arrived when our boys met one another. We had anxiously awaited this day for awhile with the understanding that a variety of emotions could be expressed by our older guy! :) So, we waited until the day after Luke's birth to do the introductions. This was best, because I had a chance to have my monitors, machines, etc. unhooked from me. I was able to move around, and J didn't have to be curious about what was going on with Mommy.

He was happy to see Mommy and Daddy despite the enormous amount of attention being given to him at home.

Much to our surprise, J was initially very interested in Little Brother.

Then, we took Luke out to give Jack a closer look.

It wasn't long before he was ready to move onto the other things in my room! This was completely fine for us, and it gave me a chance to wipe the tears from the sweet experience we had just witnessed. Both boys had a gift for one another. We tried to keep it pretty simple. J brought L a puppy lovey that is very similar to his Froggy lovey that he STILL adores!

L had a Mickey ball for J. We told J that L wanted to get him a ball so that they could play ball together one day.

Thanks, Luke!

Finally, we got some pictures of the two brothers and each of us with our BOYS!

Many of these pics show J saying "Luke...ooh-k". This was so sweet to us! J will boldly tell you that his little brother is "Ooh-k"!
