Character Kid

We are sooo very proud of Jackson for earning Character Kid of the Month! His teacher recognized him for working hard on using his words and learning new games in circle time and on the playground with his friends! He got to take his picture with the assistant principal! :)

Our New Swingset

Our boys got a swing set for Christmas! It took Daddy a little while to get it together. The lady that delivered it said it took her family FIVE days to put it together; the manual said 24 hours. The manual was right!

The boys love it! Jack asks to swing and slide everyday! He thinks it is so cool that L has his own swing! Our neighborhood has a playground that we like, too, but it is sooo nice to have one right in our backyard!

After all of that hard work, Dave wants the boys to play on the swingset every second they are outside. :) So, he wasn't happy to see this pic...he was really just sneaking away to take off his shoes!

Both Boys @ 8 mos.

Here are our boys at 8 mos. :)

Let ME Do It

Our little L would really like to feed himself and help with just about anything we are doing!

Sleepyhead

J has a yucky cough and runny nose this week. L is finally over his double ear infection after a switch in antibiotics! J rarely naps anymore but was so tired this week that he fell asleep sitting up!

L's First Playdate

Luke had his first playdate with sweet Kathryn! They were quite cute together. We caught L smiling at her when she got close! He is such a flirt!!!

Entertainment :)

L got this little toy for Christmas from my aunt, and he really loves it! He will try to catch the rolling balls from a sitting position when they pop out, and he has figured out that you have to put them back in. Sometimes, he DIVES for the balls! It is really easy for him to keep it popping, too! The first day we put batteries in it, it entertained both boys long enought for me to get dinner started and put in the oven! Aren't they precious together?!?!

Miss Lyda

Almost every Friday, my friend, Kelley and I have lunch together along with our little ones. We almost always end up at Chick-fil-A! We just love it there for so many reasons. Here is one HUGE reason why we love Chick-fil-A in our town-

Miss Lyda-this lady is like an angel on earth! She knows Jackson and Parker very well, because we have been going in there since they were about 20 mos. old. When they are not too busy or if we are there around the time it clears out, she will spend a little extra time with our boys! One of the first things she let them do was come inside this cleaning closet in the back of the playplace. They thought it was so cool! Then, she gave them a turn at sweeping. Those jobs lasted awhile---a few weeks. Then, we went through the balloon phase which I was GLAD to see leave. I am not a fan of little ones having latex ballons! When we go in there now, she takes our order from the table, and the boys always get ice cream when they are finished. It gets even better--she lets both of them go behind the counter and make their own ice cream cone! We are that the point where J asks to go to Chick-fil-A everyday, and I mean every single day! Kelley and I laugh when we think about these boys and Miss Lyda. Why wouldn't they want to go everyday? In just one lunch (last week), they got their usual lunch and playtime, a chance to win a free dessert (and they did!), a sample of the new grilled tenders, and the ice cream cone from behind the counter! Miss Lyda doesn't leave out L and K, either. She is always talking to them and even told me she added them to her prayer list along with their older brother! Oh, and in case you are wondering how J feels about Miss Lyda...he runs and gives her a BIG hug at the first moment he spots her!

Happy Valentine's Day

Today is Luke's very 1st Valentine's Day!

My two little Valentines

Jackson was so excited to choose a Valentine's card for each of his classmates this year--first year that has happened! I really enjoyed Valentine's Day with him as a four year old! Mrs. Long wanted the children to help with the cards as much as possible, so he colored on each of the cards for his classmates. For his teachers and speech therapist, he wrote as many of the letters out of their name as he could. He still has trouble writing some letters, so we just chose the ones that I knew he could do independently. I was so proud of him!! Here is the Valentine card he brought home for me.

Here is what Luke brought me....

a lot of smiles! :)

A New Therapist

Big changes came to our therapy world in January! For one, Cigna denied coverage for any therapy. We used different codes and NOTHING. So we are appealing it, Dave is talking to HR, and we are looking into scholarships for families like us--not poor enough for Medicaid but have insurance that denies coverage for a child's therapy, a child who truly needs it. At that point, OT had to be reduced, but speech had to continue--it isn't an option for us. We had to give up the last of our extras. Lori's rates were slightly higher than a clinic, she isn't in network with Cigna even if they provide coverage, and she couldn't reduce the sessions to 30 min. Research shows that apraxic kids need 4-5, 30 min., 1:1 sessions per week. Most kids J's age go to a clinic, and it was becoming hit or miss with good, productive sessions each week in the home. He does much better in the therapy room at school. I network with many other moms of children with apraxia, and it seemed like the clinic was the way to go. This was a HUGE decision for us, and one can never understand such a decision unless you have walked in our shoes. But, I know, without a doubt, that putting J in a clinic was best for him, and Lori agreed. The timing was perfect, and a week sooner or later would have left me unsure, but God laid it out perfectly. We still very much appreciate what Lori did for Jackson. She came in and met his speech/language needs when we couldn't and directed us on what to do. She got him to start talking! Anyone who helps your child like she helped Jackson becomes pretty special!

I checked out a highly recommeded clinic about 30 min. from our house. There is no doubt in my mind that they understand apraxia at this place. The owner of the clinic read all of J's evals and placed him with Miss Megan. Megan is trained in the Kaufman approach which was designed by Nancy Kaufman, the apraxia guru. She also is trained in Cycles, a new program. During the very first session, Luke and I waited on Jack in the waiting room. She described their session when she brought him back, and it sounded just like Kaufman's session that I watched back in September. She also did a Kaufman articulation test that showed me exactly the errors/substitutions that he is making. We are fortunate that his errors are consistent, because many apraxic kids are inconsistent in their errors--I think J was at one point.

Backtracking a minute...but important in all of this change and HUGE progression for J is that we had his annual neurologist appt. in December. We switched neurologists for the simple fact that we didn't feel like we were getting a lot of direction from our previous one. Again, networking is wonderful, and it is no mistake that we were led to this man. We had to wait 6 mos. to get in with him--he is the best of the best & his name is known in therapy clinics and pediatrician's offices all around our area. He will sit down with therapists (our OT was so happy that he sat down with her one time!), and he often collaborates with neuroscientists, developmental pediatricians, etc. But, my reason for wanting to see him is that he is thoroughly knowledgable in apraxia. Most of all, I wanted to find someone who could track Jackson's progress. We were with him for two hours! I had a timeline typed out, and he listened to me go over it & typed as I spoke. Before I could even start talking, the tears started as the anticipation of being there finally hit and going back to our little boy's first year of life when we didn't know there was a problem. This 6 ft. tall, black man, looked at me and in the most gentle voice said, "I want you to know that no matter what is going on with Jackson, I am going to help him." I got it together and quickly became really chatty about Jack's four years of life. He listened and he cared. He saw Jackson as a whole child and not a disorder! This man loves the Lord, grew up a missionary kid in Africa, and comes from a family of doctors. I knew before he said anything that he was not only highly intelligent but a man of character. He interacted with J for awhile, and then explained how apraxia presents itself in children. He said you treat apraxia through therapy but also in a biochemical way. They drew blood to check different levels commonly seen as having deficits in apraxic children...zinc, creatine, etc. He put him on a different multivitamin and cod liver oil. He left us with these words, "After seeing how Jackson has presented himself to me, I believe he is going to do just fine".

J at 4 years 2 mos.

As J gets older, we are really watching him mature. Often, I talk about J's apraxia. Let's face it, it's a huge part of our life, but it doesn't define our boy; it is not who he is. There are so many other things that describe our boy and make him our unique firstborn.

Oh Jackson, at 4 years old, you like to:

Watch Jake and the Neverland Pirates
Go to Chick fil A every chance you get---you ask to go to "Chicken Fae" every single day
Play with your Geotrax
Go out and about ANYWHERE
Gently play with Mommy's hair and give her kisses
Play with the Ipad and have learned quite a few tricks to skip over anything difficult on a game
Try to get Miss Terri to take another friend to ST instead of YOU
Sing your ABCs
Try to sing many, many songs even Journey :)
Play group games with friends
Bounce, bounce, bounce at Monkey Joe's or Baxter's Bunch Playhouse
Play at arcades
Go to playgrounds
Make your opinion known
Eat cake and cookies

Being silly, jumping, dancing, running, anything that involves moving--yes, that's YOU...

L at 8 mos.

Each day, Dave and I are quite convinced that our Luke is full of personality! As small as these things may seem, I know that years from now I will love reading each and every little thing my boys did at certain ages! J has always been our sweet, mild guy, and L is our comical, energetic boy! That isn't to say that each don't have some of the other's qualities, but they are definitely different.

Oh Luke, you are full of tricks these days! At 8 mos, you like to:

Stick your hand in my mouth and giggle if I pretend to bite your hand
Laugh hysterically at anything when you are tired
Roll from one side of the room to the other

Pull Mommy's hair and laugh
Eat apples, pears, and any orange veggie

Razz with food in your mouth

Pull on your brother's clothes when you want his attention
Shout when you want Mommy and Daddy's attention

Smile sweetly at Jackson when I rock both of you at night
Play Pat a Cake AND Peek a Boo
Play with your toys on the floor, jump in your jumperoo, swing, and try to grab your mobile

Throw toys at times, pull your paci off of the clip, and grab ANYTHING in sight

Woody-Buzz Sheets

J got some new Toy Story sheets from Grammie and Grandpa! He is in love with them! Here he is just minutes after he walked in and saw them!

S'mores

Our little family went grocery shopping with the plan to get batteries and baby food for L. Needless to say, we came out with a little more! A few years ago, we asked for a s'more/fondue maker for Christmas. My sister, Jen, bought it for us, and we realized that we had never made any with Jackson. With a little nudge from Dave, I gave in and agreed to buy the items so that we could make s'mores during the Super Bowl. We ended up having a great time! We had to roast the marshmallows by tealight, because we forgot the oil. Jackson only got to put the s'more together, because we weren't brave enough to let him roast his own that way, yet.

Luke enjoyed his carrots and pears! :)
