The time change has been somewhat brutal on all three of us! Today has been the first day that J hasn't resisted naptime and woke up on his own for school. We have been talking a lot about obeying, or listening and doing what Mommy says without complaining or whining. He got a lot of praise today for quickly choosing a book and not complaining before naptime. He also turned off his video after ONE time of watching it (on his own) like Mommy told him and without complaining! Today (well, all week) has also been very special to us, because J's speech progress has taken off. Progress in apraxic kids can really soar, but then a lull will occur and the cycle continues. He is adding lots of new words...many words would be considered distorted, but most of his intentions are clear to us and Miss Lori. We are getting some complete words, and he has moved onto producing harder sounds in words that come out pretty clearly (i.e. the k sound). We still struggle with the typical inconsistency and leaving off certain endings or beginnings in words that goes along with apraxia, but there is still progress. His cognitive abilities are soaring when tested receptively by his teacher. He has quickly learned all 26 of his letters, can receptively identify numbers, 15+ body parts, etc. He has moved onto playing games like letter BINGO and using the touch screen computer in his class to play on the Starfall website. However, he did something today that he has never done before....J has understood the concept of counting for a long time now, and would point to items in a series, say something unintelligible for each number, and we would praise his attempts. Today, his teacher brought me in to watch him....she had foam triangles lined up and told J to count them for Mommy. He pointed to each one and verbally (expressively) said the number..."one, two, three". Then, she let me hear him say numbers like "three" when she held up a foam three. On a side note, we thought the word "three" wouldn't come for awhile because it has a th blend, difficult r sound, and the vowel ee has been a hard one for J. Yesterday, he told Lori that he was "three", but we thought that was a one time thing. It proved to be more. I have been having him count for me all afternoon, and three seems to be his favorite number in the same way J is his favorite letter. This would be such a small accomplishment for a child without a language delay, but for us...this is HUGE! So big, that I cried the whole way home, called Dave and cried a little more, emailed Lori and cried through the e-mail. Again, only those who have a child with apraxia, know firsthand what we have been through with J's speech, or are in the "speech world" can really appreciate this accomplishment. It is amazing and a blessing to us to have him take what is in his brain and express it to us. He is making connections and learning how to make his mouth move to produce the words/sounds that he needs to communicate. We are just praying that this will continue and that the times when we just can't understand him won't discourage him from trying harder. For now, we are rejoicing in J's accomplishments. There are a lot of people who are helping J and are definitely due a huge thanks...Miss Lori, Miss Terri, Miss Collins, to name a few, but we offer up our biggest thanks to the greatest teacher who ever walked on this earth, yet never had to open a single textbook for answers!

Insurance Woes
Not too long ago, our Sunday School teacher (who we LOVE, by the way) was sharing with the class how all of us have things going on in our life that keep us on our knees in prayer. If you can't think of anything, then maybe you should look at your life in regards to your relationship with Christ. Dave and I could relate all too well about issues that keep us on our knees but remembering to not let worry consume you and your witness. The fleeing from worry part will have to be another post, because I am quite guilty of giving into it and freely confess that I am not proud of it. I do know how to leave it at God's feet...I just pick it back up later. Another post.
One struggle that we were encountered with in January was a switch in insurance companies at Dave's work. This didn't seem like a really big issue until J's speech therapy was denied. We were left feeling somewhat helpless as we know J has to have speech therapy NOW in order to see only remnants of apraxia in elementary school. Yet, $600 a month just didn't seem to fit in our budget. We knew we would have to pray about this and remember God's promise to take care of His children. It is so true that God's love for our child is even greater than the love we have for him, so we had to hold onto that truth. We reached out to some of our prayer warrior friends, family, and Sunday School class. God first revealed to us that He was with us when Lori, J's speech therapist, called me one night and let me know that she would continue serving J for a cheaper price...something that would work for both of us. She loves our son and sees him improving. In my head, I knew it would be so much easier and more profitable monetarily for her to pick up a Medicaid child where she was guaranteed payment or to serve those children under 2 who pay her through the state's early intervention program. Regardless, she offered, and we knew God was making arrangements for us.
Dave quietly told me one night that he was going to take care of this situation and would be an advocate for J. I knew he would try hard but some things are just out of my husband's hands. Dave got to work on it, I gathered documentation from Lori and our pediatrician, and Dave's boss jumped on board as an advocate for our boy. After almost three months of working on this, the insurance company has agreed to pay the total requested by our SLP. Lori was quite surprised as she doesn't see this happen often. Speech just isn't always seen as a priority. The company has also agreed to look closer at coverage for apraxia after being educated on the condition. As far as J is concerned, they will pay for his therapy! Dave and I once again can share a testimony of faith and prayer. After all, we serve a God much bigger than an insurance company!

A Mommy's Heart
26 weeksHere is our little guy who we are planning on welcoming to our family in June! In fact, on March 31st, the doctor and I will decide on a date between May 31st-June
3rd for him to be delivered. The time is going by fast at this point!! We are anxious to have him here with us, yet we know this experience will be quite different from last time. Dave and I feel more confident as parents, yet we have another little one to think about who will have needs that will still need to be met. It seems like lately I have been thinking about my last few months with just J. For 3 years, it has been just us while Dave was working. We have had so much fun together, yet we are getting ready to give him such a special gift...a sibling...a brother! My eyes have been closely watching J for these three years, savoring many of our special moments, but also tracking his development. I am praying I can do this equally as well for baby #2, all while staying attentive to my firstborn. Most of the moms I have talked to went through these very same emotions. I remind myself of this often and remember the blessing it is to watch your children learn and grow in the way they should (even if it makes Mommy a little weepy!). I am so thankful for the bond that I have with J, and the fact that I know him so very well. Both of these boys have grabbed their mommy's heart in a way that once again points to a love that can only come from one place...Heaven!

Swim Lessons Completed
We finished up swim lessons on Thursday. J did well, even better progress the last few weeks. I thought he may get a little certificate saying he participated, but J actually got a real progress report! He learned how to push off of the side of the pool, a few techniques for floating on his back (chicken, airplane, rocket), and practiced being horizontal in the pool & sticking his face in while paddling. We still need to work on the latter two. It helped that going under, paddling, jumping in along with an overall comfort in the water were things he already had under his belt. He can do this class again until he is 6. He loved the lessons...sometimes a little too much...at times, he would just let go of the side of the pool and paddle to the swim instructor when she wasn't ready for him. It was sorta funny but really he needed to follow her directions about holding on and watching her demonstrations. We had to remind him of this often. Here are a few pics from the last day.

Swim lessons are over, but now is the time to sign up for team sports. Yes, I can't believe it, but 3 year olds can play soccer or t-ball at the Y. Dave and I want him to try both, but we just aren't sure he is ready for team sports...maybe next year!

Baby Brother
I wish I had some new pics of little brother to post, but I don't have any. :( I did get to see him last week as they were checking my low lying placenta for the last time. Everything looks great with it, and the placenta has moved up just like it did in my last pregnancy! Little guy was curled up in a ball, kicking me at the same time. Silly boy!! I feel him move all around quite a bit! We are so eager to meet him. I am in my 25th week. My doctor said we may be able to sit down at my next visit to look at a good date for me to have my c-section. Woohoo! She also said everything looks good..blood pressure, weight gain (only 11 lbs. so far), baby, etc. My belly is expanding quickly at this point, and people are not shy about telling me! I go back next week for my glucose screening..sure hope I pass!
